Acquario di Genova
Aquarium · Porto Antico
The Acquario di Genova is one of the largest aquariums in Europe and one of the most visited attractions in Italy. It sits right on the Old Port, in a building designed by Renzo Piano (who is Genovese â weâre very proud of this), and houses thousands of animals across hundreds of species.
I know aquariums can feel touristy, but this one is genuinely world-class. The shark tunnel, the dolphin pavilion, the jellyfish room â theyâre all spectacular. Margheritaâs favourite is the penguins, and honestly, I canât argue with her.
My advice: go on a weekday morning, right when it opens. On weekends and holidays it gets very busy, especially the dolphin area. Entry is by timed reservation, so buy your tickets online in advance â itâs cheaper than at the door and saves you the queue.
There are combined tickets that include the Biosfera (Renzo Pianoâs glass sphere full of tropical plants, out on the water) and the Bigo, a panoramic lift with a 360° view over the port. Both are worth it.
Afterwards, stay and walk the Porto Antico waterfront â cafĂ©s, the old galleon, an outdoor cinema in summer and an ice rink in winter.
The first time we walked Margherita through the shark tunnel, she went completely quiet and squeezed my hand tighter and tighter. Now she's the one dragging us back, every single visit.
