Via Garibaldi
The Rolli palaces · UNESCO
Via Garibaldi â once the âStrada Nuovaâ â is Genovaâs grandest street: a row of Renaissance palaces built by the noble families in the 16th century. Together with the other Rolli palaces, itâs a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Just walking it is a small journey: frescoed façades, marble doorways, and hidden courtyards and gardens glimpsed through open gates. Itâs a few minutes from the centre, flat, and best taken slowly.
Three of these palaces â Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Tursi â form the Musei di Strada Nuova, with Ligurian and Flemish paintings, frescoed rooms and, in Palazzo Tursi, one of Paganiniâs violins. If you want to step inside a Rolli palace, this is the place.
